Most students spend hours revising maths and see little improvement. The problem is rarely effort — it is structure. This guide shows a three-phase system used in our tuition sessions, with specific tactics you can apply this week.
Before you open a textbook, you need to know which topics are costing you marks. Print a blank specification checklist — AQA, Edexcel and OCR all publish these — and mark each topic red, amber or green based on your last mock or class test.
Be honest. A topic is only green if you can score full marks on it cold, without prompting. If you need a formula sheet or a hint, it is amber. If you cannot start the question, it is red. Most students have five to eight red topics at this stage. That is normal.
Quick win: Red topics in the first half of the paper — number, ratio, basic algebra — are high-leverage. Fixing a red topic worth 6 marks on Paper 1 Non-Calculator often takes less time than improving an amber topic on Paper 3 by the same amount.
Once you know your reds and ambers, stop revising one topic for hours. Maths revision works best in short, spaced bursts. Allocate thirty minutes per topic, then switch. This forces your brain to retrieve the method each time, which builds memory far better than re-reading.

Notice the pattern: new topics, mixed review, and a timed paper. The timed paper is non-negotiable. It is the only way to train pace and stamina. For a complete set of topic packs organised by strand, see our revision packs page.
Sitting a past paper while checking your phone every ten minutes is not revision. You need exam conditions: silence, no phone, no calculator on the non-calculator paper, and a strict time limit. After the paper, mark it immediately using the official mark scheme. Do not wait until the next day.
Check whether your working would have earned the method mark even if the final answer is wrong. Many students lose marks by skipping steps that the mark scheme requires.
If your method is correct but your arithmetic is off, you have found a calculation weakness. Drill ten similar questions before you move on.
Keep a single page — paper or digital — with three columns: topic, mistake type, and fix. Review this page before every subsequent paper. Patterns will emerge.
Here is how one of our tutors structures a half-hour session on solving linear equations. You can replicate this alone or with a study partner.
Step 1 — Collect x terms on one side.
Subtract 3x from both sides: 2x + 7 = 15. (M1)
Step 2 — Collect numbers on the other side.
Subtract 7 from both sides: 2x = 8. (M1)
Step 3 — Divide by the coefficient.
x = 4. (A1)
The method marks are awarded for the correct operations, even if the final arithmetic slips. This is why showing working matters: a student who writes 2x = 9 and then x = 4.5 still earns two of the three marks.
After working through three examples with full working, the student attempts four independent questions. Any error is discussed immediately, not left for later. For more on exam technique and time management, see our exam technique guide.
Passively copying formulae into a notebook feels productive but does little for recall. Test yourself instead: cover the formula, write it from memory, check, repeat.
Paper 1 is where grade boundaries are won or lost. Mental arithmetic and fraction manipulation weaken quickly if neglected. Drill five non-calculator questions every day.
Proof and reasoning questions appear on every Higher paper. They look harder than they are. Learn the standard structures — algebraic proof, counterexample, deduction — and practise one each week.
Knowing how to solve a problem and solving it in exam conditions are different skills. Start timed papers at least six weeks before the first exam.
