Before you write a single word, spend the first 5 minutes of any exam reading the entire paper. Not skimming β reading. Identify the questions worth the most marks, the questions you are most confident about, and any questions that are likely to take longer than their mark allocation suggests. This reading investment pays back with interest every time.
In a standard 90-minute paper worth 80 marks, you have roughly 1 minute 7 seconds per mark. A 1-mark question gets 1 minute. A 6-mark question gets 6 minutes. Spending 10 minutes on a 2-mark question is a catastrophic use of your time.

Command Words That Change Everything
The Most Costly Reading Mistakes
Exam anxiety is a physiological response, not a character flaw. The release of cortisol narrows cognitive focus and impairs working memory β exactly the opposite of what you need. It is manageable. The following techniques are evidence-based, not motivational clichΓ©s.
Box Breathing
Breathe in for 4 counts. Hold for 4. Out for 4. Hold for 4. Repeat 3 times. Activates the parasympathetic nervous system within 60 seconds. Used by military, surgeons, and athletes for exactly this reason.
Expressive Writing
Studies by Ramirez and Beilock (2011) showed that writing about your worries for 10 minutes before an exam significantly improved performance by “offloading” anxiety from working memory. Write it out before you go in.
Reframe the Anxiety
“I am excited” and “I am anxious” produce almost identical physiological states. Telling yourself you are excited rather than anxious — a simple cognitive reframe — measurably improves performance. This is Harvard Business School research.

A-Level proofs require you to start from one side and reach the other β never manipulate both sides simultaneously. Every line must follow logically from the last. End with the result clearly stated and the QED square (β‘) or equivalent.

Extended 6-mark questions in Biology are always assessed for Quality of Written Communication (QWC). This means spelling, grammar, and scientific terminology all matter. The mark scheme typically requires 6 distinct correct points. Structure your answer with one clear point per sentence.

“Enzymes are biological catalysts. They speed up reactions in the body. When it gets too hot they stop working because they break. They have an active site that fits the substrate like a lock and key.”
2/6 marks. Imprecise vocabulary (“break”, “stop working”), incomplete mechanism.
β Strong Answer
“Enzymes are biological catalysts that lower the activation energy of metabolic reactions. The substrate binds to the complementary-shaped active site, forming an enzyme-substrate complex. Increasing temperature above the optimum causes the active site to change shape (denature), preventing substrate binding and halting catalysis.”
5/6 marks. Precise vocabulary, mechanism explained, cause and effect clear.
These words and phrases appear in mark schemes. If you use the vague version instead of the precise one, you lose the mark.

GCSE — Common errors and how to avoid them
Every moles calculation begins with a balanced equation. The coefficients give you the molar ratios. Do not skip this step even if you think you know the answer.
Write out the calculation: e.g., CaCOβ = 40 + 12 + (3Γ16) = 100 g/mol. Show every element.
Moles = Mass Γ· Molar Mass, or Moles = Volume (dmΒ³) Γ Concentration, or Moles = Volume (dmΒ³) Γ 24 (for gases at RTP). Write the formula, substitute, calculate.
Use the coefficients from the balanced equation to find the moles of the substance you need. This is the step most students miss.
Convert back to mass, volume, or concentration as required. Write the unit. A number without a unit is incomplete.
