The Honest Comparison
This is the question we are asked more than almost any other: does the IB carry more weight than A-Levels? The honest answer is nuanced, and any consultant who gives you a flat yes or no is simplifying. Here is the whole picture.
Depth over breadth. Three or four subjects, studied intensively for two years.
Assessment is almost entirely by final written examination at the end of Year 13 (some practical/coursework elements in sciences and a few other subjects).
No compulsory core — a student studying three sciences takes no humanities or languages at all in Years 12–13.
Graded A*–U per subject; universities set offers as grade combinations (e.g. A*AA).
Breadth alongside depth. Six subjects across science, humanities, languages, maths and the arts — three at Higher Level, three at Standard Level.
Assessment blends final examinations with substantial internal assessment (coursework, orals, investigations) throughout.
A compulsory core: the Extended Essay (an independent 4,000-word research project), Theory of Knowledge, and CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service).
Each subject graded 1–7; total score out of 45 (6 subjects × 7, plus up to 3 core points).
In the strict, official sense: no. UK universities do not award bonus consideration purely for choosing IB over A-Level — UCAS publishes an official tariff that converts IB and A-Level grades onto directly comparable points, and admissions tutors are trained to read both with equal weight. A 38-point IB Diploma and A*AA at A-Level are treated as broadly equivalent offers by most universities.
In practice, three things quietly favour strong IB candidates at the margins:
A humanities-strong student who has also kept Maths and a Science alive to 18 demonstrates a versatility that three narrow A-Levels cannot show — genuinely useful for joint honours and flexible degrees.
A 4,000-word independent research project is close to a mini-undergraduate dissertation. Strong EEs are sometimes referenced directly in personal statements and occasionally mentioned favourably at interview.
The IB is recognised identically everywhere — useful if there is any chance the family relocates, or the student wants to keep US and European universities genuinely open alongside UK options.
Choose IB for the breadth, the research training, and the international flexibility — not because it will out-score an equally strong A-Level set on a UCAS form. Choose A-Level for maximum depth in a small number of subjects, particularly where a course (Mathematics, Engineering) rewards specialised intensity above all else. Both, done well, open the same doors.
This single choice causes more confusion than any other IB decision — and unlike the A-Level vs IB question above, this one has real consequences for competitive courses.
Pure, proof-based mathematics: algebra, functions, calculus, and formal mathematical reasoning.
Required for: Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Computer Science at the top departments, and mathematically rigorous Economics programmes.
HL AA is the closest IB equivalent to A-Level Maths + Further Maths combined in rigour.
Statistics, modelling, and real-world data analysis, with technology used throughout.
Accepted for: Business, Psychology, Social Sciences, Design, and many Economics/Natural Sciences programmes — but not the most mathematically intensive courses.
AI HL is respected and challenging, but is not accepted as equivalent to AA HL for Mathematics or Engineering admission at the strongest schools.

A student takes three subjects at HL and three at SL. The strategic question is which three — and Maths HL should be one of them for any STEM-facing student, since converting from SL to HL after the first few months is difficult and rarely advisable.
“Is a 6 at SL better than a 4 at HL?” — yes, for the overall Diploma score, but not for course eligibility: a university requiring HL Maths will not accept a strong SL grade as a substitute. Get the level right for the target course first; optimise the grade second.
