Business & Management — BSc

Business at the leading universities is nothing like its reputation elsewhere — quantitative, selective, and built around the most normalised placement-year culture of any subject. At the strongest schools the placement is not an add-on; it is the point.

What They Actually Study

The spine runs from analysis to strategy:

1

Year 1 — the quantitative base

Accounting, economics, statistics and organisational behaviour — the numbers matter more than applicants expect.

2

Year 2 — the professional year

Finance, marketing, operations, strategy — and the placement application season, run like a module in itself.

3

Placement year (most schools)

a salaried year in a major firm between years 2 and 3.

4

Final year

strategy capstones, specialist options and a consultancy-style project for a real client at many schools.

How It’s Taught

Lectures and case-method seminars; assessment leans on group projects, presentations and real-company briefs alongside examinations.

Contact Time — In Person

Lectures & seminars — 12–15 hours weekly

Group work — constant — deliberately mimicking professional teams

Independent Work Expected

Case preparation — 15–20 hours weekly

Applications — the placement season is a genuine workload — schools coach it formally

Placements & the Integrated Route

This is the subject where the placement machinery is strongest:

1

The placement year

salaried (£20,000–£30,000 typical) at blue-chip firms; tuition that year ≈£1,960. Schools with dedicated placement offices — Bath and Warwick are the benchmark — report the large majority of committed students placed, and many convert directly to graduate offers.

2

Insight & internship route

spring insights in year 1 and summer internships in year 2 mirror the finance pipeline for students at three-year schools like LSE.

3

Support

placement offices run CV clinics, employer days and interview coaching as core provision — this is what parents are paying the ranking premium for.

Where It Leads — and the Milk Round

Consulting, banking, FMCG leadership schemes and the technology firms recruit these cohorts on campus; the placement year converts to graduate offers so reliably that many students finish year 3 already signed. Read our parent’s guide to the Milk Round →

At the Top Ten

Note Oxford and Cambridge teach management only jointly (E&M at Oxford) or at masters level; the strongest dedicated undergraduate schools include several just outside the traditional ten.

What This Means for You

A well-chosen business degree hands your child a salaried year inside a major firm, a professional network, and very often a graduate offer — before they sit finals. The differences between schools’ placement records are enormous and invisible in the prospectus; knowing them is our job.

The right course, the right university, the right preparation

We help families choose the course variant that fits the child — then build the application that wins the place: subject strategy, personal statement, admissions tests and interview preparation, led by the academics themselves.

Fees shown are the government-regulated home undergraduate cap for 2026/27 (£9,790; rising to £10,050 in 2027/28). International fees vary by university and are typically £28,000–£45,000 per year, and up to £65,000+ for clinical courses. Entry offers, contact hours and placement statistics are typical published figures and vary by institution and year — we verify current details for your child’s exact shortlist during consultancy.
